February and March have brought about a series of quiet changes that will make huge impacts in the future implantation of aquaponics systems around the world!
The trip back to the Dominican Republic in February was awesome. I was accompanied by our Aquaponics Expert and friend Chad. It was an eye opening experience for him, as well as me. I learned more about Aquaponics and Chad learned about what A Generous Life is all about. I committed to learn and teach everyone we see about the knowledge Chad shared with me. In addition, Chad committed to helping A Generous Life where ever we go. If fact, he is committed to joining us on our trip to Ecuador in June 2014.
Chad was able to pin point all of the areas in which improvements could be made to our current design on our first aquaponics system. The main idea was to lower the need for electrical usage. Though the current system has plenty of power, through his experience in the DR Chad realized we needed to make a few changes. After Chad worked on a few prototype pumps, he then brought up the idea of using a vortex system he had heard about, which would aerate the water naturally and eliminate the need for expensive or hard to find aerators at all. Chad began working on a new design to incorporate this idea and sketched out a detailed blue print. This design should cut the consumption of electric down by at least 50%, which will really help when we are working in parts of the world without or with limited power. The size solar system needed to power the system, will be half and the cost will be cut drastically. Ultimately we are creating a more sustainable system.
Through coaching and mentoring (and some added help by our board member Keith), I was able to use only the types of materials found in 3rd world countries and make our first home system. The water tank has been filled, and we are eager to pick up some tilapia. We are so excited to have a live demonstrations to show any interested parties. We have even been asked to collaborate with another non-profit organization to reach an entirely different population of impoverished individuals here locally, as well as where they are working in Africa. We will have many opportunities for individuals to get involved with A Generous Life both in the countries we have developed partnerships, and right here in the Valley of the Sun.
Quiet no more, we are ready to shout…watch out world, here we come!!
